“Everything ... affects everything” ― Jay Asher

  • There were 5.79 million unemployed in the United States as of February 20 of 2020;

  • The number increased to 7.14 million by March 20th;

  • Additional 26.45 million filed for unemployment as of April 23rd;

  • This brings the total to roughly 33.5 million;

  • As for March 20th, the number of full time employees was 127.93 million which corresponded to 5.5% unemployment rate;

  • As of April 23rd, the number of employed decreased to 101.48 million which corresponds to unemployment rate of 33%;

  • Unemployment insurance for someone making $5,000 per month is $1,800 per month or approximately 33% of the income;

  • $5,000 per month corresponds to hourly wage of $31.25;

  • $1,800 per month corresponds to hourly wage of $11.25;

  • The effect of a $1 increase in the minimum wage ranged from a 3.4% decrease (95% CI 0.4 to 6.4) to a 5.9% decrease (95% CI 1.4 to 10.2) in the suicide rate among adults aged 18–64 years with a high school education or less ;

  • Therefore, the decrease of hourly wage by $20 increases risk of suicide by 5% x 20 = 100%;

  • In 2019, roughly 50,000 Americans committed suicide;

  • Therefore, the USA may lose 50,000 x 100% = 100,000 people to suicide in 2020
