Would it be possible to get some emergency medications?

Q: Would it be possible to get some emergency medications in case boss becomes unwell whilst on Island during the lock down period ? Our consultant has suggested:

  • Amoxical oral

  • Ceftriaxone IV

  • Chloroquine

A: I recommend the following:

  1. Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) 75 mg 10 capsules

  2. Azithromycin (Z-pack) 250 mg 6 tablets

It is also ok to get Augmentin (Amoxicillin 875 mg and clavulanate potassium 125 mg) 10 tablets

There must be no storing of anything IV (may be with the exception of IV fluids) including Ceftriaxone, or drugs like (Hydroxy)Chloroquine. If the boss, or anyone else, is sick enough to need IV antibiotics or chloroquine, he must be immediately evacuated to the nearest hospital. Having these medications on the island may lead to unwarranted interventions and delay essential and even life-saving care. For the same reasons, there must be no oxygen concentrators, machine respirators, and ventilators on the island, or, for that matter, in possession of any private person or non-medical organization elsewhere.

If we do want to have anything like that on the island, many other medications, equipment and supplies must be available, and, more importantly, there must be a well-trained medical staff present. We are essentially talking about having a small hospital on the island.

This can be done, but this is a whole different dimension in terms of logistics, time, expense, training and maintenance needed.

As we say in Russia, whoever advised you to get these supplies for the island, “heard the bell but has no idea where sound is coming from”, e.g. has no idea what he is talking about. Get your money back!
